Living in the Pacific Northwest is a unique experience, especially as a dad who is often outside with youth sports, yard work and wanting to do anything outdoors from October through May. After my recent purchase, this Xtratuf boots review highlights why I think these are a no brainer for your next purchase.
Whether it’s coaching soccer in the pouring rain, a family hike in the mountains or a spontaneous fishing trip, having reliable footwear is crucial.
Enter Xtratuf, the brand synonymous with waterproof boots that claim to be the ideal companion for the rugged terrains and constant drizzle of the PNW. Not to mention they are a status statement in the ultimate ruggedness of Alaska.
I recently got my hands (or rather, my feet) on a pair of Xtratuf waterproof boots, and here’s my thoughts, assessing their performance in the challenging conditions of the Pacific Northwest.

Xtratuf Boots Review – The Good
Durability:
The Pacific Northwest is known for its unpredictable weather, and let’s face it, rain is almost a daily occurrence.
Xtratuf boots are designed to withstand the elements, featuring strong construction that holds up well against the region’s constant barrage of rain, mud, and uneven terrain.
The durability of these boots is impressive, making them a reliable choice for whoever needs footwear that can keep up with their busy lifestyle. Whether in their backyard or out in the wild.
Waterproof Performance:
One of the standout features of Xtratuf boots is their exceptional waterproof performance.
Living in a region where rain is practically a part of the scenery, having boots that keep your feet dry is pretty much non-negotiable. The Xtratuf boots do an excellent job of repelling water, thanks to their high-quality materials and well-engineered design.
Whether wading through puddles or trudging along a soggy trail, my feet have remained consistently dry, proving that these boots are up to the task of handling the PNW’s notorious wet conditions.
Traction:
Navigating the diverse landscapes of the Pacific Northwest requires reliable traction, and Xtratuf delivers in this department.
The boots feature a slip-resistant outsole that provides excellent grip on various surfaces, from wet unsteady ground to muddy trails in the forest.
As someone who often finds himself chasing after adventurous kids and yard work in the mud, having surefooted stability is important. The enhanced traction adds a layer of safety when transitioning from solid to soft surfaces.
Xtratuf Boots Review – The Okay
Weight:
While the durability and waterproof capabilities of Xtratuf boots are commendable, there is one aspect that might be a downside for some: the weight.
These boots are undeniably sturdy, and that comes with a trade-off in terms of weight.
Listed at approximately 3.16 pounds, for those who prefer a lighter feel on their feet during long hikes or outdoor activities, the heft of the Xtratuf boots might be a drawback. It’s a personal preference, but it’s worth considering if you prioritize lightweight footwear.
Also choosing lighter weight socks can help here but depending on the conditions, that may not always be an option.
I have not found this to be an issue but it certainly could be for some.
Breathability:
While the boots excel in keeping water out, they may fall short in providing optimal breathability.
In warmer weather or during strenuous activities, my feet tended to get a bit warmer than I would have liked.
If you’re planning on wearing these boots in a variety of conditions, it’s worth noting that they may not be the coolest option for warmer but still wet spring days.
Style Factor:
Xtratuf boots are undoubtedly functional, but when it comes to style, they may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
However, they do come in a wide variety of colors that certainly help. I stuck with traditional black but there’s some good color options available.
The design leans heavily towards practicality, with a focus on durability and performance rather than fashion.
I will say, they are incredibly easy to get on, which for me running out the door is a key design benefit. Additionally, they are “low-top” which provides a bit more style than the massive shin-high boots we grew up with.
While I appreciate the rugged aesthetic, some instances might call for a more versatile boot that seamlessly transitions from outdoor adventures to casual outings.
Our local backyard neighbor, Columbia Sportswear is probably the better option here. It’s a minor consideration, but for those who want a blend of style and substance, the Xtratuf boots might lean a bit too heavily on the latter.
When the rain dries and sunny skies return, these Olukai shoes are one of my favs to wear every day
Why Xtratuf Boots Are Worth Considering
Pacific Northwest Tough:
The Xtratuf boots are tailor-made for the challenges of the Pacific Northwest.
From heavy rain to slippery trails, these boots are built to endure the region’s demanding conditions. For those who love spending time outdoors with their families, having footwear that can handle whatever the PNW throws their way is a nice bonus.
The durability and waterproof features make Xtratuf a reliable choice for those who want boots that are as tough as the terrain they explore.
Family-Friendly Functionality:
Being a dad often means being the designated carrier of snacks, first aid kits, and other essentials. Xtratuf boots offer ample support and comfort for those long days of family adventures.
The slip-resistant traction ensures that I can keep up with my energetic kids without worrying about slipping on wet surfaces.
These boots aren’t just for show; they are a practical choice for those who need reliable footwear that can keep up with the demands of parenting in the great outdoors.
Investment in Quality:
Coming in at an Amazon price point of $75.84 the cost is certainly reasonable. I firmly believe it’s an investment in quality that pays off in the long run.
The durability and robust construction mean that these boots are built to last.
For anyone who wants footwear they can rely on for years to come, the cost is justified by the extended lifespan of the boots.
It’s a case of getting what you pay for, and with Xtratuf, you’re paying for top-notch quality.
